Double OT thriller: Warriors extend Falcons' losing woes

Manila – The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors pulled off a nerve-wracking 95-91 double overtime win over the Adamson Falcons to get back on the winning track during Sunday’s 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Araneta Coliseum.
UE’s Paul Lee fed teammate Pari Llagas for the go-ahead basket in the final 10.9 seconds of the second overtime, shattering the 89-all deadlock, the 10th and final of the tooth-and-nail match.
Llagas pegged the final count at the stripes after Adamson botched its game-tying play.
“Adrenalin, heart and breaks of the game carried us in this game. We needed games like this to toughen us. This game showed what kind of stuffs these guys (Red Warriors) are made of,” said UE rookie coach Lawrence Chongson.
Lee’s unselfish play in the endgame redeemed his erratic play at the end of regulation and missed free throws in the first overtime that could have given his team the win right away.
The win improved UE’s record to 3-2 while Adamson tumbled to 1-5. It was the Falcons’ fourth setback with a margin of less than five points.
Lee, the Season 70 Rookie of the Year, rounded up his brilliant game with a team-high 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, both career-highs.
Elmer Espiritu also had a career game for UE with 20 points while Llagas collected 19 markers, 11 boards and four blocks.
The troika’s big games offset Adamson rookie Roider Cabrera’s career-high 19 points.
