Monfort leads Ateneo to solo lead

Manila – The defending champions did not need Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s second half heroics this time.

The spotlight belonged to second stringer Emman Monfort in Ateneo Blue Eagles rousing 93-77 win over the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers during Sunday’s 72nd University Athletics Association (UAAP) men’s basketball at the Philsports Arena.

The 5-foot-6 second stringer guard connected on six of his nine three-point attempts en route to a career-high 20 points.

The Growling Tigers was leading, 18-16, when Monfort ignited a strong finish by the Blue Eagles in the opening period to take a 30-21 lead.

Monfort burned the Tigers’s defense with 11 points in the second period.  His fourth triple capped off a 20-11 start in the second canto to give the Blue Eagles a staggering 20-point lead, 52-32.

Ateneo went 11-for-24 in the three-point territory for a whopping 45.8 percent clip.  It was enough to hold off the Tigers, who lost for the first time in three starts.

The win put the Blue Eagles solo on top of the standings.

Al-Hussaini flexed just enough muscle this time for 13 points in 21 minutes.  Eric Salamat and Ryan Buenafe contributed 14 points apiece to complement Monfort’s effort.

“We have improved  in our outside shooting this year.  Emman (Monfort) was amazing.  Other teams will have to respect our outside shooting now.  This will help Rabeh (Al-Hussaini) inside,” Ateneo coach Norman Black said.

Wait, sa basketball lang champion ang ateneo. UST ang defending general champion ng UAAP. tsk2. Napakadaming sports sa UAAP kaya huwag isipin na basketball league lang ang UAAP.

Ateneo has constantly been proving why they are the champions last season 71. It is true that we lost Chris Tiu and he is a big loss, but what's amazing is that everyone's putting their best foot forward to compensate for his loss. I am an Atenean and I have watched them train in Moro. They are doing their best to protect the throne and it is not impossible for us to get a back-to-back this year. Kudos to Monfort for his amazing three-point shots. I've seen him in school; he's not as tall as Rab

UST loss the game to the point a CENTER Player is a really need. UST kasi may ibinuga naman yan nung first quarter but the problem is, though they defended and limited AL-HUSSAINI's presence, they are not that much prepared for Monfort's, Buenafe's and Salamat's shots. Though I salute the tigers game but they are in desperate need of a JERVY CRUZ-player at the post.

ateneo is the team to beat, but its too early to tell that they'll dominate all the way to another championship for the katipunan base school, feu will be there to challenge them, with a line up of veterans and pretty good rookies, feu has a chance to be the champion this season
