Manila – The defending champions did not need Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s second half heroics this time.
The spotlight belonged to second stringer Emman Monfort in Ateneo Blue Eagles rousing 93-77 win over the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers during Sunday’s 72nd University Athletics Association (UAAP) men’s basketball at the Philsports Arena.
The 5-foot-6 second stringer guard connected on six of his nine three-point attempts en route to a career-high 20 points.
The Growling Tigers was leading, 18-16, when Monfort ignited a strong finish by the Blue Eagles in the opening period to take a 30-21 lead.
Monfort burned the Tigers’s defense with 11 points in the second period. His fourth triple capped off a 20-11 start in the second canto to give the Blue Eagles a staggering 20-point lead, 52-32.
Ateneo went 11-for-24 in the three-point territory for a whopping 45.8 percent clip. It was enough to hold off the Tigers, who lost for the first time in three starts.
The win put the Blue Eagles solo on top of the standings.
Al-Hussaini flexed just enough muscle this time for 13 points in 21 minutes. Eric Salamat and Ryan Buenafe contributed 14 points apiece to complement Monfort’s effort.
“We have improved in our outside shooting this year. Emman (Monfort) was amazing. Other teams will have to respect our outside shooting now. This will help Rabeh (Al-Hussaini) inside,” Ateneo coach Norman Black said.
