UE Blows Out La Salle

The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors opened their title drive with an emphatic 65-46 win against the rookie-laden De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers in the 72nd UAAP Men's Basketball before a sea of red and green at the Big Dome.
The Red Warriors dedicated this victory to the late Rolando "Brenn" Perez, their long-time representative to the UAAP Board, who succumbed to a heart attack Friday night.
"Actually, we never talked about what happened (to Brenn) before the game. But this one is for him. We'll dedicate this season for him," said league neophyte coach Lawrence Chongson.
The Warriors played with heavy hearts in the first period which saw the Green Archers taking a brief one-point lead, 10-9. But it was only a matter of time before they methodically dismantled their Taft-based counterparts.
Behind Pari Llagas' inside game and Paul Lee's brilliant playmaking, UE came alive in the second period taking a 30-24 halftime lead, which they never relinquished.
Green Archer rookie Joseph Marata scored on back-to-back treys to pull DLSU within striking distance. UE, however, broke the game wide open from the 8:02 mark turning a 48-41 lead to a 22-point bubble using a 15-to-nothing run.
The rookie-laden Green Archers' inexperience tolled heavily as they missed 53 of their 70 shots for a paltry 24 percent field goal shooting. The Green Archers' 46 points was the league's lowest team output since the University of the Philippines scored 45 curiously against DLSU in Sept. 3, 2005.
Not one Green Archer scored in double figures with veteran James Mangahas' nine points leading the team. In contrast, UE's veterans showed up with Llagas scoring a team-high 15 points. Paul Lee had a remarkable all-around performance to the tune of 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists while Elmer Espiritu came up with a huge 9-point,14-rebound and three-block effort.
The Scores:
UE 65 - Llagas 15, Lee 11, Espiritu 9, Zamar 9, Lingganay 6, Reyes 5, Acuñ 4, Ayala 2, Alabanza 2, Acibar 2, Tagarda 1.
